It’s getting close to the kids’ bedtime and you decide to let them play one more game. As it comes to an end you can feel it coming. You tell them it’s over and then 3…2…1.
Tantrum time!
If that sounds familiar to you then welcome to the club! Dealing with child tantrums is part of parenting 101. But as every child is different, it seems like there is no “one size fits all” approach to stopping them in their tracks.
That being said, we have put together some parenting methods that have proven to be effective in making them a bit more bearable.
- Focus On Yourself
Now, this may seem counterproductive or even selfish, but did you know that often the biggest factor in if the child tantrum you are dealing with will turn into a full-on meltdown is you?
If you allow yourself to become overwhelmed, angry, or even resentful towards your child, they will pick up on it. We as parents set the tone, so be careful to check your emotions.
If you are finding yourself frustrated, remind yourself that you are dealing with a child. Very often there is no logic involved, and they are likely acting up because they are the ones who are emotionally overwhelmed.
Keeping this in mind will help you avoid yelling and losing your temper when the going get’s tough.
- Be One Step Ahead
No one knows your children better than you. You can probably smell a child tantrum before it happens, which means that in many cases, you can prevent it.
Changes in the routine are often the main culprit. So if it’s a lack of sleep then make the afternoon nap a non-negotiable. If it’s hunger then always have some snacks to hand for when you are out and about. Whatever it is be sure to make a mental note and try your best to prepare for it in advance.
- Show Them You Care
There are many different parenting styles and techniques for child tantrums but at the core of all of them should be love. So keep this at the forefront of your mind and remember to be empathetic.
While it can be hard if you are dealing with a meltdown on aisle 9 in the supermarket, always allot some time for reasoning with your children.
Most of the time the most effective point to do this is when they have calmed down a little.
Make it clear that you know that they are upset and explain what you understand the reason to be. Very often they will chip in, so leave some room for conversation. This is one of the techniques used at successful children’s centers such as Dream Big Children, and to great effect.
- Take Away What They Want
For your children, you are the world. This is why tantrums are an easy way to get what they want. You!
So be sure to give them enough praise and attention when they deserve it, however, don’t be afraid to turn off the tap when behavior gets bad. If you have tried to reason, shown concern and you can see there is no danger to their health then simply don’t engage until they calm down.
Once your children realize that bad behavior is not rewarded with all eyes on them, but they will be showered with love when they behave correctly, many child tantrums come to an end.
