The temptation of food that isn’t great for our bodies is too much sometimes. There are bound to be days when all you eat is processed food or sugary treats, but for the sake of your health there has to be balance. When you make the decision to adopt healthy eating habits, it can feel like a mountain to climb where you never reach the top. However, it doesn’t have to be an all or nothing approach, because habits are not undone, nor are they formed, overnight. Here are some tips for incremental changes you can start making right now.
Start the Day as You Mean to Go On
Breakfast is quite essential. You have been asleep all night and the first thing your body needs is sustenance. Yet not everyone is a morning person, and this is a major barrier in finding a healthy way to start the day, especially when you add in the getting ready and out of the door part. More than 30% of adults tend to skip this meal, despite all the glowing benefits so, this is definitely an area that requires improvement.
Avoid Processed Foods
Sugar, fat, and salt are three food groups that need moderation. Processed food usually has a high content of all three, and so it is advised to avoid it. This means not eating it for every meal every day and limiting the intake to a few a week. Things like ready meals, fast food, candy, etc., all fall into this category and cause real damage if consumed in large quantities, such as heart disease and obesity.
Learn Balance
Balance will be your best friend when configuring those engrained food habits and breaking the mould. You are allowed to eat the not so healthy stuff, but the trick is to learn moderation. People who go cold turkey with a crash diet and deny themselves everything are less likely to succeed because the process is immediately too overwhelming and therefore the temptation to revert to old ways it too high. Whereas those who focus on small (but still effective) lifestyle changes and dietary curves often find more longevity in their health journey.
Try New Things
Trying new things is one of the hardest tasks, but it is an important part of changing habits for the better. Try a local fresh fish delivery or that weird vegetable you’ve been intrigued by every time you do a food shop and let your taste buds discover their passion. When you really think about all the flavours and textures you have yet to try, it almost feels like a travesty.
Accept the Bad Days
Try and remember on the dark days that this is not an instant fix, it is an accumulative process that takes more than just time. Willpower will feature heavily, as will frustration and elation. Keep going!
Healthy habits are worth acquiring at any point in life, whether you are 12 or 82. Regardless of the reasons, the positive consequences will speak for themselves and enable general well-being too.
