Camping can be a great way to explore the outdoors, bond with friends and family, and just generally get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We highly recommend giving it a try and to help you prepare, here’s a list of things you may need:
Tent –
Shelter is one of the first things you should plan for when heading out into the woods. If you’re just starting out we recommend starting small by getting a tent. Make sure it’s waterproof to keep you dry and warm in case mother-nature surprises you with a storm.
Sleeping Bag –
After covering the primary shelter, you’ll want to be sure that you have something to sleep in. You want to be sure and stay warm through the nights so check the temperatures and be sure to choose one that’s suitable for the expected temperature range.
Air Mattress or Sleeping Pad –
People have a different idea of what “roughing it” might look like. If you’re up for sleeping on the ground we say go for it, but if not, then rent or buy a sleeping pad or air mattress.
Camping Stove or Grill –
While it’s a nice thought that you’ll be cooking on the wood fire you start at camp, there are lots of times this just isn’t a great idea. For one, the fire dangers can be high during warm, dry months, and it’s also tough to do if it’s raining. Save yourself the trouble and pack a grill or stove for easy grilling.
Food and Water –
This might seem like an obvious item to add, but don’t overlook it. Stocking up with nonperishable food items, snacks, and plenty of water is important. Plan for the length of your intended stay, and maybe pack extras just in case.
Lighting Solution –
Don’t forget you might need a way to light your way in the dark hours whether for a midnight restroom break or just to keep the tent light for a bit longer. Flashlights, lanterns, and headlamps are all good options.
Fire-Starting Supplies –
Don’t make your camping trips more difficult by trying to start a fire from nothing. Bring matches or a lighter plus kindling to really keep it flowing.
First Aid Kit –
You never know what you might run into when you’re out in nature. From simple cuts to bee stings you’ll want to be prepared. Bandaids, antiseptic spray, pain relievers, insect repellent and more are all good to add into your kit.
Clothing –
Make sure you’ve got all the clothing you might need for different weather conditions. Layers are always a good way to go when you’re headed out so pack sweaters and pants, but also t-shirts and shorts.
Navigation Tools –
There isn’t always wi-fi or even cell service where you’re camping so make sure you’ve got a map, compass, or GPS to use when you’re out on hikes.
Before you head out make yourself a checklist to be sure you’re not forgetting something important. Check the local regulations for where you’re headed and see if they recommend anything specific for your area.
